During those final weeks there, flowers became an important subject for him, and he painted a remarkable group of roses and irises filled with the freshness of spring. The roses that appear nearly white today were originally painted with touches of pink; some of Van Gogh’s pigments faded over time, gently changing the color harmony we now see. The original painting is preserved in the collection of the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.
